With today’s In-Port win, PUMA will win the overall In-Port series for the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12.
I’ve been reading “The One”, RJ Smith’s fine new biography of James Brown. I haven’t gotten too far yet, only about 100 pages in, but I’ve read far enough to learn how the first JB single, “Please, Please, Please” came about.
The America’s Cup World Series Newport is over. The race village is being packed up, and the circus is heading west to San Francisco, where the next regatta will be held in August. It was a fantastic event by any standard. Here are a few final photos from yesterday.
The day began with a skydiving demonstration by the Red Bull Air Force. It was a perfect day for sailing on Narragansett Bay, and it was another great day for Oracle Racing as Russell Coutts won the match racing championship for the America’s Cup World Series by defeating his teammate James Spithill. Coutts did well in the fleet race too, leading for a long time before being edged out by Luna Rossa Piranha, driven by Chris Draper, who went on the win the fleet racing championship for Newport. Spithill was the overall champion for the inaugural America’s Cup World Series.
It was a fantastic regatta, and we’ll miss these people, and these boats, here in Newport. Let’s hope they return again soon.
It was another great day for Oracle Team USA Spithill. They won the speed trials, and the first fleet race. Meanwhile, Emirates Team New Zealand finally broke through after a really challenging week by taking the second fleet race in impressive fashion. Team Korea finally had some results to show for their efforts, with a second and a fourth in the fleet races, and a third in the speed trials. They are now just a few points away from a podium finish for the regatta. And Luna Rossa … well no matter how they’re doing in the standings, they always look good doing it.
It was another big day for Oracle Racing USA. Both Spithill and Coutts won their semifinal match races and will meet in the final on Sunday.
James Spithill and Dean Barker were at it again this afternoon. In the end it was a last minute pass that settled it.
